Dawn McNamara is scheduled to be ordained a deacon, God-willing, on September 10th, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Church in Fredericksburg. We are seeking donations that will be used to provide her with a set of deacon’s stoles as well as money for her discretionary account once she is ordained. All checks should be made out to Grace & Holy Trinity with “Dawn McNamara” in the memo line. You may also donate through the church website.

Spirited Sisters meets Monday, August 8
Spirited Sisters, a women’s group of the parish, will meet on Monday, August 8th at 5:30 p.m. at Burger Bach in Carytown. If you’d like to join for supper, please contact Cathy Saunders. It’s also okay to just show up.

Parish Workday next Saturday, August 13
On Wednesday, August 3rd, work crews began the removal of the red carpet in the sanctuary. In the coming weeks, the floors will be refinished with two new coats of black paint. As the work in this space continues, we will be replacing the felt on the church’s pew kneelers which have been removed from the worship space. The Property Committee is asking for volunteers to come in either the morning or the afternoon of Saturday, August 13th. The first shift will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the second shift at 1:00 p.m., and we’re serving lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you’d like to help, please sign up for a shift.

Red Door Youth Service Day – Friday, August 19
We hope to have plenty of youth, friends, and family to come and help with the Red Door Ministry from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on August 19th. In addition to service days, youth and families are welcome to join any Friday this summer. Please let us know by August 17th for this specific event, or by the Wednesday before any Friday. For more information, please contact Kyle Bomar.

Commonwealth Concert Opera: Wagner
On Thursday, August 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall the Commonwealth Concert Opera will offer an evening of Scenes and Arias from the operas of Richard Wagner. Promising young professional singers join seasoned veterans, soprano Caroline Whisnant and tenor James Taylor, accompanied by pianist Charles Staples and narrator Reese Williams. The performance includes arias “Dich teure Halle” from Tannhäuser, “Notung, neidliches schwert” from Siegfried, “In fernem Land” from Lohengrin, and the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Additionally, performers will sing duets from Tannhäuser and the epic Love Duet from Die Walkűre. We hope you will join us for this evening of great music that will be made more accessible by narration, providing context for each scene. Our show is just over an hour and the dress code is SUPER casual; including the cast! Tickets are $15 at the door or you can purchase them online, which includes a free glass of wine or soft drink.

While Duane is away
Duane is currently away for some well-deserved rest and retreat and will return to the office on Monday, August 22nd. We are grateful to the Rev. Jack Sutor who presided and preached at Holy Communion last Sunday, and who will do so again at both services on Sunday, August 14th. Our Associate Rector, the Rev. Paul Evans, will preside and preach at both services of Morning Prayer on Sunday, August 7th and again on Sunday, August 21st. For all pastoral care concerns, please contact Paul Evans.

The albums Requiem: A Thanksgiving for Life and Pentecost 2022 are now available online for your listening pleasure. You can also watch pieces included on the album on our GHTC YouTube Channel.

Blessing of the Backpacks
As the children of the parish return to the school year, we invite them to bring their backpacks to church on Sunday, August 28th, to receive a blessing over their supplies and their studies. This year, there will be an outreach component to this event. We encourage you to bring donations of school supplies to support the Anna Julia Cooper School, one of our community partners that serves families and children with limited resources. We invite your donations of classic school supplies for 2nd through 8th graders, especially dry erase markers, notebook paper, pencils, pens, and tissues. Clergy will bless the backpacks and the donations at the same time during worship.

Education

Children’s Chapel
For the rest of the summer, instead of the usual Sunday School, children are invited to join us for Children’s Chapel. We will gather in the parish hall with the whole congregation at 10:30 a.m., and then, early in the service, the children will process out of the parish hall and head upstairs to attend a simplified children’s liturgy in the children’s Sunday school room. Each day, we will sing, offer prayers, hear a Bible reading, and learn about one of the saints. Please collect the children immediately following the service.

Parish Life

Senior Brunch moved to Sunday, August 28
The Senior Brunch has been moved from Sunday, August 7th, to Sunday, August 28th now that repairs have begun in the nave, and services are being held in the parish hall at least until then. Parishioners of a Certain Age are invited to assemble in the Parish Hall for brunch following the 10:30 a.m. service in honor of their accumulated wisdom, and mostly to enjoy each other’s company. Our young people are invited to serve the meal from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Spirited Sisters Book Club
The Book Club will meet Monday, August 15th, at 4:00 p.m. at Elaine Quinn’s house. The book is The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley (author of The Guest List). The group is open to everyone at GHTC and their friends. For more information or to let us know you are coming, please contact Mary Ann Blankenship.
