Duane will be on holiday for some well-deserved rest and retreat beginning Friday, July 29th through Sunday, August 21st and will return to the office on Monday, August 22nd. We are grateful to the Rev. Jack Sutor who will preside and preach at both services (8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.) of Holy Communion on Sundays July 31st and August 14th. Our Associate Rector, the Rev. Paul Evans, will preside and preach at both services (8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.) of Morning Prayer on August 7th and 21st. Beginning on Friday, July 29th until Duane’s return, please contact Paul Evans at (804) 420-8380 for pastoral care matters.

Parents’ Night Out – Friday, August 12
On Friday, July 22nd, 10 GHTC parents gathered at Brambly Park Winery in Scott’s Addition for cocktail hour with Duane while 15 children and youth enjoyed time together at church. Mark your calendars for the August Parents’ Night on Friday, August 12th. Childcare will once again be provided at the church beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Cocktail hour with Paul and his wife, Molly, begins at 5:30 p.m. Please register by Wednesday, August 10th.

Street Parking is Allowed Under the Altria Permits
The Altria Theater assures us that Grace & Holy Trinity Church parishioners have permission to park on Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. during church services, where the signs say “Altria events only.”

Senior Brunch moved to Sunday, August 28
The Senior Brunch has been moved from Sunday, August 7th to Sunday, August 28th. Parishioners of a Certain Age are invited to assemble in the Parish Hall for brunch following the 10:30 a.m. service in honor of their accumulated wisdom, and mostly to enjoy each other’s company.  Our young people are invited to serve the meal from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Commonwealth Concert Opera: Wagner
On August 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the parish hall the Commonwealth Concert Opera will offer an evening of Scenes and Arias from the operas of Richard Wagner. Promising young professional singers join seasoned veterans, soprano Caroline Whisnant and tenor James Taylor, accompanied by pianist Charles Staples and narrator Reese Williams. The performance includes arias “Dich teure Halle” from Tannhäuser, “Notung, neidliches schwert” from Siegfried, “In fernem Land” from Lohengrin, and the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Additionally, performers will sing duets from Tannhäuser and the epic Love Duet from Die Walkűre. We hope you will join us for this evening of great music that will be made more accessible by narration, providing context for each scene. Our show is just over an hour and the dress code is SUPER casual; including the cast! Tickets are $15 at the door, which includes a free glass of wine or soft drink.

Beth Davis Returns
Following successful hip surgery and the proper recovery time, Beth is back at the organ and in the choir room. We’re so glad it all went well for her, and are very happy to welcome her back. We’re also most grateful to David Wheeler, Stephen Henley, and Cheryl Van Ornam, who filled in for her with style, grace, and considerable skill.

Sean McDonald, Assistant Choirmaster and Organist
On August 1st,  Sean McDonald will arrive to be the new Assistant Choirmaster and Organist. Previously, he was organist at Media Presbyterian Church in Media, Pennsylvania, and the elementary music teacher at T.M. Peirce School in Philadelphia. He is now the music teacher at Robious Elementary School. Sean holds a Master of Music degree in sacred music from East Carolina University; and a B.A. in music with a minor in jazz studies and a B.S. in Computer Science, both from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. We look forward with great pleasure to welcoming Sean and his family.

Blessing of the Backpacks
As the children of the parish return to the school year, we invite them to bring their backpacks to church on Sunday, August 28th, to receive a blessing over their supplies and their studies. This year, there will be an outreach component to this event. We encourage you to bring donations of school supplies to support the Anna Julia Cooper School, one of our community partners that serves families and children with limited resources. We invite your donations of classic school supplies for 2nd through 8th graders, especially dry erase markers, notebook paper, pencils, pens, and tissues. Clergy will bless the backpacks and the donations at the same time during worship.

Children’s Chapel
For the rest of the summer, instead of the usual Sunday School, children are invited to join us for Children’s Chapel. We will gather in the parish hall with the whole congregation at 10:30 a.m., and then, early in the service, the children will process out of church and head upstairs to attend a simplified children’s liturgy in the children’s Sunday school room. Each day, we will sing, offer prayers, hear a Bible reading, and learn about one of the saints. Please collect the children immediately following the service.

Parish Life

Spirited Sisters – Monday, August 8
Spirited Sisters, a women’s group of the parish, will meet next on Monday, August 8th at 5:30 p.m. at Burger Bach in Carytown. If you’d like to join for supper, please contact Cathy Saunders.

Parish Workday – Saturday, August 13
The improvements in the nave will get going at the beginning of August.  As part of this process, we will be replacing the felt on the church’s pew kneelers. The Property Committee is asking for volunteers to come in either the morning or the afternoon of Saturday, August 13th. The first shift will get started at  9:00 a.m. and the second shift at 1:00 p.m., and we’re serving lunch in between. On Sunday, August 7th, in between the morning’s services, Andrew Peacock and David Lewis will give a brief demonstration of the work to be done. If you want to help, please sign up for a shift.

Spirited Sisters Book Club
The Book Club will meet Monday, August 15th, at 4:00 p.m. at Elaine Quinn’s house.  The book is The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley (author of The Guest List). The group is open to everyone at GHTC and their friends. For more information or to let us know you are coming, please contact Mary Ann Blankenship.

Dawn McNamara
Dawn McNamara is scheduled to be ordained a deacon, God-willing, on September 10th, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Church in Fredericksburg. We are seeking donations that will be used to provide her with a set of deacon’s stoles as well as money for her discretionary account once she is ordained. All checks should be made out to Grace & Holy Trinity with “Dawn McNamara” in the memo line. You may also donate through the church website.

Red Door Volunteer Day – Friday, August 19
We hope to have plenty of youth, friends, and family to come and help serve Red Door Ministry from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on August 19th. In addition to service days, youth and families are welcome to join any Friday this summer. Please let us know by August 17th for this specific event, or by the Wednesday before any Friday. For more information, contact Kyle Bomar.

CirclesRVA – Tuesday, August 2
After many months of meeting only on Zoom, CirclesRVA will return to the Parish Hall on August 2nd. We expect to continue to be the place where the group will convene face to face on selected Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
