Easter 2022

Highlights

We Welcome the Rev. Paul Evans this Sunday, June 26
We are delighted to welcome Grace & Holy Trinity’s (GHTC) new Associate Rector, the Rev. Paul Evans, to the pulpit this Sunday morning. Many of you will remember Paul from his service to this Parish before he went to seminary and was ordained. He has particular experience in church and church school administration and communications. Paul’s presence will be a gift to all of us. Read more about Paul’s  history and connections in Richmond » Please plan to stay for a simple reception after the 10:30 a.m. service to welcome Paul and his wife, Molly, in person.

Stephen Henley, Organist for this Sunday
Thank you to Stephen Henley, our organist for this morning’s worship service while Beth Melcher Davis is recovering from hip replacement surgery, which went well. He will also be back to play for us on July 17th. Stephen served as Music Director at Bon Air Presbyterian Church for twenty years, and has recently retired from this position. We are grateful to Stephen for bringing his musical gifts into today’s worship.

Independence Day Picnic – July 3
On Sunday, July 3rd, we’ll have only the 10:30 a.m. service using the 1790 First American Prayer Book, after which we’ll adjourn to Monroe Park for a picnic, featuring Lee’s fried chicken and hot dogs. Bring a blanket or a chair, and enjoy each other’s company over good food in the lovely park. Please R.S.V.P for all persons attending by July 1st on the form sent through our eNews, or call the church office between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The Passing of Barbara Zerkel
It is with profound sorrow that we report the passing of Barbara Zerkel, beloved parishioner and choir member, who died on Friday, June 10th, following a brief illness. A funeral service will be held on July 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at GHTC, with burial in the Columbarium, and a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Summer Office Hours
For the rest of the summer season, the church office hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Outside of those hours, the doors will be locked and the phones will not ring through. Please plan accordingly. We will return to the regular 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. schedule on Monday, September 12th (the Monday after Labor Day).

New Sanctuary Sound System
We are still raising the last of the funding for the complete new sound system in the church, which will replace the sound board and all the microphones, speakers, and wiring, so that every parishioner will hear every word and note. We are more than three quarters of the way to the goal, and are enormously grateful for all you have already contributed. We welcome your participation as we raise the remaining $18,000 to complete this long-overdue improvement in the life of the parish. The plan is to have the new sound system installed and operating by November. To contribute to this fund, you may mail a check or handle the cost online at ghtc.org/give, and indicate “sound system” on your gift.

Education

Children’s Chapel
For the rest of the summer, instead of the usual Sunday School, children are invited to join us for Children’s Chapel. We will gather in the church with the whole congregation at 10:30 a.m., and then, early in the service, the children will process out of church and head upstairs to attend a simplified children’s liturgy in the children’s Sunday school room. (The moment will be noted in the bulletin.) Each day, we will sing, offer prayers, hear a Bible reading, and learn about one of the saints. Please collect the children immediately following the service.

Parish Life

Parents’ Night Out is a Hit
Both the parents, out on the town, and the children, with food and activities under the watchful eyes of our staff and volunteers, had a wonderful time spending the evening apart! Sixteen children were looked after here while their parents had cocktails with Duane, and then went wherever they pleased. Kate Given sends special thanks to the staff, particularly Kyle Reed for his help setting up; and to volunteers Lisa and Phil Dawson and Theo Given. Save the date for the next one on July 22nd.

We Are Grateful to the Breakfast Crew
The best breakfast in Richmond is on hiatus for the summer months, and will return to the Parish Hall on the 11th of September. Thank you to all our talented and patient chefs, both leadership and worker bees.

June 26 Youth Event Canceled
Due to an unforeseen disruption in Kyle Bomar’s long-standing travel plans, the Youth Field Day originally planned for the late afternoon of June 26 th in Monroe Park has been canceled.

Outreach

Youth Service Day with Red Door
On Friday, July 8th, our youth will be front and center to help with Red Door lunch. Please contact Alan Lai, Kitchen Coordinator, Red Door Volunteer Coordinator to sign up and participate.

Needed for the Red Door Clothes Closet
The clothes closet is still in need of men’s underwear and summer t-shirts (M, L, & XL), simple toiletries, and also of plastic grocery bags to send them off in. You may leave those things in the “Service Ministries” collection box in the elevator hall on your left as you come up the stairs from the parking lot in the rear of the church.
