Chamber Music Concert
Grace & Holy Trinity Church (GHTC) is hosting a chamber music concert in the Parish Hall on Saturday, May 21st, at 3:00 p.m., followed by a reception. The program includes two trios for piano, violin, and viola, the first in C sharp Minor written in 1921 by Robert Fuchs, a Vienna Conservatory professor; and the second originally written for horn, violin and piano by Johannes Brahms in 1865, and scored for viola rather than horn in 1884. The concert features Katya Lapin, piano; Matvey Lapin, viola, and Violaine Michel, violin. Learn more about the Chamber Music Concert »
Children and Youth Sunday
Because the fifth Sunday in May is part of the Memorial Day weekend, Children and Youth Sunday is happening this Sunday the 22nd. Our young people are taking an active part in the 10:30 a.m. service; Kyle Bomar, Youth and Adult Formation Minister, will preach, and the acclaimed Greater Richmond Children’s Choir will be singing. The Nursery is open from 8:00 a.m. until noon, but there will be no children and youth formation programming or Sunday School.
Bishop’s Visit and Confirmation (One Service Only on This Day)
At the 10:30 a.m. service on June 5th, The Rt. Rev. Susan Goff, Suffragan Bishop of Virginia, will preside and preach, and will baptize and confirm more than a dozen children, youth, and adults. In preparation for this milestone, the confirmands have participated in monthly retreats to study Christianity, the Episcopal Church, and membership in this parish. There will be special music featuring the James River Brass, including Parry’s “I Was Glad” sung by the Parish Choir with brass and organ accompaniment. At the same service the graduating seniors among the parish will also receive the blessing of the Bishop. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Special parking arrangements will be made for this service, and communicated to you nearer the date.

Samples from Sunday
This week’s “Sample from Sunday” is the organ piece “Introduction and March on Lauda Anima” by Brenda Portman (b. 1980). The piece is based on hymn #410 “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven.” The piece begins with a pedal solo and the hymn tune played in the right hand, and it concludes with a majestic march based on the hymn tune. Watch the video » And you can see all the choral offerings from the Institution service for the Rev. Duane Nettles on the GHTC YouTube Music Channel.
Flowers on the Altar
This Sunday’s Altar Flowers are given to the glory of God and in memory of Grace Broaddus by Bill Broaddus and her family. If you would like to remember or honor a loved one by giving the altar flowers, please contact Judy Bowman at 804-359-5628 (ext. 14), with dates and specific requests (such as colors and/or particular flowers). The Wednesday night group began meeting again via Zoom early this month, and will continue through June 1st. Join the group from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a Lectio Divina meditation on the Gospel for the upcoming Sunday. No preparation is needed. Just show up with a desire to delve deeper into the Gospel. If you are interested in joining in, please contact Beth McClelland or Mary Ann Blankenship.

Two More Chances to Meet the Nominees for Bishop
Richmond’s “Meet and Greet” with the Diocesan Bishop nominees will be held on Friday, May 20th at All Saints Church. This week, there will be two more of these events, one on Monday, May 23rd, at St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville; and one on Tuesday, May 24th, at Trinity Church in Fredericksburg, both from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All members of the Diocese are invited to attend. For details, visit the Diocesan website »
Parents’ Night Out
On Friday evening, June 10th, parents may drop their children off at church any time between 5:00 and 5:50 p.m. for child care, dinner, and activities. While we look after your children, you are invited to join the Rector at 5:30 for a drink at the roof bar at Quirk Hotel (201 W Broad St). Then make your own way to your chosen date night spot and enjoy a night out. We’ll need you to register by Wednesday, June 8th, so we’ll know how many children to prepare for. Please plan to pick up your children by 9:30 p.m.
New Sanctuary Sound System
We have contracted for a complete new sound system in the church, replacing all the microphones, speakers, wiring and sound board so that every parishioner will hear every word and note. The funds are more than halfway to the goal, and welcome your participation as we raise the remaining $30,000 to make this long-overdue improvement in the life of the parish. To contribute to this fund, you may mail a check or handle the cost online at ghtc.org/give, and indicate “sound system” on your gift.
Red Door’s Participation with Shood
Shood is a non-profit founded by GHTC parishioner Robin Telfian, and run in partnership with Jeff Wells, owner of two Fleet Feet stores here. “We believe everyone deserves the basic dignity of having a clean pair of shoes that fit.,” says their mission statement. “We make gently used, high-quality shoes available to those in need through a personal, pop-up shopping experience, throughout Richmond, Virginia.” We are happy to report that Shood will be here on Friday, June 3rd, to give shoes to our Red Door visitors at mid-day.
