Easter 2022

Highlights

Thank You, Billy & Meredith McGuire
The afternoon garden party and picnic at the McGuires at their lovely house in the beautiful Goochland countryside was an absolute delight. The food was wonderful, the children had a ball in the pool, the parishioners thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company, and even when the skies opened, the McGuire hospitality never wavered, and the party kept right on. In particular, we are enormously grateful for their flexibility, not only in including everyone in the invitation, but also in accommodating our request to hold an evening service as well. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the day such a success.

Paul and Molly Evans Expecting a Baby
We are excited to announce that Associate Rector Paul Evans and his wife Molly are expecting a baby boy in January! Paul and Molly welcome your prayers as they prepare to become parents.

Blessing of the Backpacks
As the children of the parish return to the school year, we invite them to bring their backpacks to church this Sunday to receive a blessing over their supplies and their studies. We encourage you to bring donations of school supplies to support the Anna Julia Cooper School, one of our community partners that serves families and children with limited resources. We invite your donations of classic school supplies for 2nd through 8th graders, especially dry erase markers, notebook paper, pencils, pens, and tissues. Clergy will bless the backpacks and the donations at the same time during worship.

Parish Office Hours – Church Office Closed Monday, September 5 for Labor Day
Beginning September 6th (the day after Labor Day), the church office hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Outside of those hours, the doors will be locked and the phones will not ring through. Please plan accordingly. If you’re trying to reach a specific staff member, please refer to the contact page on our website. Also note the church offices will be closed Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day.

Worship Services Return to the Church on September 11
After seven weeks of services in the parish hall, our last Sunday in this space will be September 4th. The following Sunday, the 11th, we will at last re-enter the newly refurbished nave. There you will notice new felts on the kneelers, perfectly polished brass, spotless pews, and the newly painted floor! We are spectacularly grateful to so many. Thank you: To the contractors who made significant repairs, painted the floors and the outer doors; to the parishioners who helped carry all the books out during our last service in the church before the renovations; to Jack Sutor who came to preach and serve the Communion services in Duane’s absence; to Beth Davis and Sean McDonald for musical inspiration; to the Altar Guild teams who kept things blooming; to Andrew Peacock, Billy McGuire, and the property committee for making repairs to the pews and kneelers; to Jodie and Thomas Pully, Dougie Erikson, and the other volunteers for polishing the pews; and above all, to our sexton Roland Boone for his dedication to making our worship spaces orderly and reverent.

Fall Programming Returns Sunday, September 11
After the summer months during which many parishioners have been traveling or away, we look forward to the start of a new program year. The Best Breakfast in Richmond will once again be served from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and programming – including Children’s Chapel and Adult Formation will return – and we will be offering new opportunities for worship. Keep an eye out for the Fall Newsletter for more details about all upcoming events and programming.

Wednesday Evening Sung Compline Service starts September 14
Beginning Wednesday, September 14th at 8:00 p.m. we will start a weekly service of Compline, with prayers led by our compline quartet singers. The service provides a meditative respite from the busyness of our lives and makes room for us to pause, breathe, and pray. Join us following the service for cookies, coffee, and conversation.

Save the Date: Parish Ministry Fair – Sunday, September 25
On Sunday, September 25th, after the 10:30 a.m. service, representatives from the various ministries of the church will be available at booths around the parish hall, where they will talk to you about what they do, and encourage new volunteers to participate. There will be catering to sustain you while you investigate the possibilities. Everyone who comes into the Parish Hall to visit the fair will get a raffle ticket – one per household. At the end of the fair, someone will win dinner for four prepared by our New Orleans-born-and-bred rector at his house.

Education

Communion Preparation
This October, we invite children who are in 3rd through 5th grade to join Children and Young Families Minister Mrs. Kate Given and Associate Rector Paul Evans for a deeper look at Holy Communion. During these classes, children will look into the way this sacrament shapes our lives as Episcopalians and Christians. Parents, please plan to bring your children for two Sundays in October for instruction, and then to attend church on November 6th to watch them receive the sacrament with a deeper understanding of its meaning. Please keep an eye out for the registration link.

Parents’ Night Out – Future Dates
Parents’ Night Out has been a huge hit! Keep an eye out for registration for the next Parents’ Night Out, November 11th. Future dates include January 6th, 2023, and March 17th, 2023.

Children’s Chapel
During the 10:30 a.m. service, children will first gather with the whole congregation. Then, early in the service, children will process out of the parish hall and head upstairs to participate in a simplified children’s liturgy in the Sunday school room. Each day, children will sing, offer prayers, hear a Bible reading, and learn about one of the saints. Please pick up your children immediately following the service.
