About GHTC

Who is GHTC?

Welcome to Grace & Holy Trinity Church (GHTC), where we are committed to being an inclusive and life-transforming Episcopal parish. As a spiritual center on Virginia Commonwealth University Monroe Park Campus, GHTC seeks to foster an affirming, Christ-centered connection with the diverse community that downtown Richmond offers.

    Worship & Music

Worship is when we give our deepest affections and highest praise to something. To worship God means to honor and show reverence, acknowledging and celebrating God’s power and gratitude. Episcopal worship is a liturgical practice that involves tradition and symbolism, a contemporary expression of faith in God. Explore Worship at GHTC here.

    Parish Life

Parish life is centered around the parish, which is the core of the Episcopal church’s operations and structure. Parishes are self-supporting congregations that organize and run church ministries and local communities of faith. The mission of parish life is to contribute to the vitality of the church community. Explore Parish Life at GHTC here.

    Education

Education in the Episcopal church is a value-based approach to learning with a balance between faith and reason. As a model of God’s love and grace, education welcomes exploration of beliefs, faiths, and traditions, while prioritizing loving and serving others. Explore Education at GHTC here.

    Mission

Mission, or Outreach, is a way to reach beyond the Episcopal church and share the importance of Christ through building relationships that promote and create a spiritual and healthy world. This can be achieved through church ministries and local organizations providing services and long-lasting resources to communities. Explore Mission at GHTC here.

    Plan Your Visit to GHTC

Thank you for considering visiting with us. We hope you will feel at home as soon as you walk through our doors. Here are some answers to questions you may have about your first visit at Grace & Holy Trinity Church.

    Where are you located?

We are located in downtown Richmond at 8 N. Laurel Street. The church sits next to the Altria Theater on Monroe Park within the Monroe Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.

    Where do I park?

We offer complimentary Sunday parking inside the VCU W. Main Street Parking Deck at 801 W. Main Street, just 500 feet from our front entrance. Simply save your church bulletin, or grab one of our parking permits, and scan their QR codes upon exiting the parking deck. Visitor spaces, including three handicap spots, are located in our private parking lot directly behind the church on N. Cherry Street. Please read the parking guidelines on the parking lot signage. Street parking and handicap parking are also available in front of the church and around Monroe Park.

Please refer to this map for directions from the VCU W. Main Street Parking Deck to Grace & Holy Trinity Church.

    How do I dress?

We are not overly formal. Some of our parishioners wear a dress or a suit and tie, while others choose business casual attire.

Where do I go once I arrive?

From our front entrance on N. Laurel Street, you will turn left to walk through the narthex, or lobby, and go into our main sanctuary. We will have plenty of staff and volunteers ready to guide you. To the right of the narthex is our Parish Hall, where you will find activities, refreshments, and restrooms. If entering through our back door from the parking lot, you will proceed down the hallway, through the Parish Hall, and then turn right into the sanctuary.

Is there breakfast or a coffee hour?

Parish Breakfast for Sunday mornings begins at 9:00 a.m in the Parish Hall. A coffee hour in the Parish Hall follows our 10:30 a.m. worship service.

    Are children welcome?

Yes, we are very family-friendly, and we know it’s not always easy getting everyone out of the door. We do provide a wonderful nursery staff should you wish to drop off your infant during morning worship. Our nursery is located on the second floor of the Parish House. Children from Pre-K to 2nd grade may participate. Our Sunday School teacher will usher your children into the sanctuary after the morning offering, about mid-way through the service. We also provide activity bags when entering the church for children wishing to stay with their parents through the service. If young children get fussy, you are welcome to use our library to the right of the narthex. We also have changing tables in the family restroom located in the Choir Room.

    Can I take communion?

We offer communion in most of our services. In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are welcome and encouraged to come forward and receive the sacrament. If you do not wish to receive communion, you may come forward, cross your arms across your chest, and a receive a blessing. If you are not physically able to come up for communion, let an usher know, and the worship leaders will bring the Holy Sacrament to you. We supply our pew backs with blue “Gluten-free” communion cards. If you wish to receive a gluten-free sacrament, please bring this card with you to the altar, and replace the card when you are finished.

Do I need to bring anything to church?

Before you enter the sanctuary, an usher will hand out service bulletins with everything you need to follow along. Our pews all include a Book of Common Prayer, as well as hymnals. While scriptures are included in the bulletins, you are welcome to bring your personal Bible to follow along.

    Are there any COVID restrictions?

Currently, masks are optional and no physical distancing is required. All church staff and choir members have been fully vaccinated. We are currently following the CDC Community Level system. We monitor and average community levels for the City of Richmond, Henrico County, and Chesterfield County to determine our protocols. Click here to learn how to protect yourself and others further.

    What is the Episcopal Church?

The Episcopal Church is part of the Anglican Communion, the third largest Christian body in the world. The Anglican Communion encompasses more than 80 million members in 160 countries. Grace & Holy Trinity Church is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia led by Bishop Mark Stevenson.

While we share many qualities and beliefs of our fellow Christian churches, several tenets makes us Episcopalian:

    • Our worship services are rooted in liturgical traditions and follow The Book of Common Prayer; a typical service includes New and Old Testament readings, sacred hymns, prayers, a sermon, confession and assurance of forgiveness, and the Holy Eucharist–or communion.
    • Every Baptized Christian regardless of denomination is welcome to receive communion.
    • Anyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or marital status, may lead in worship and may serve as bishops, priests, and deacons.
    • The Episcopal Church permits any couple, regardless of sexual orientation, the rite of holy matrimony.
