Assistant Priest Position Available

FULL TIME | Grace & Holy Trinity Church, Richmond, VA

Job Description

We are a warm, vibrant, downtown church, with 328 parishioners in Good Standing from all over the greater Richmond residential areas and from widely differing professional and economic backgrounds. Some families have been part of this parish from the beginning. As the city has grown and diversified, our own families have grown and changed with it.

Our community of faith is rooted in worship, through which we express our love of God, each other, and our neighbors. Our Average Sunday Attendance is 183 with two services. We are blessed with a long tradition of excellence in music, enriching the services. The Choirmaster has developed outreach and fundraisers to connect us further with the communities we serve. Our Sunday services are the anchor of our communion of faith with each other. The programs we offer children and their families are a priority. This parish is financially strong, with a healthy endowment contributing to the budget. 

Starting salary is $75,000 (salary/housing) + $5,330 SECA reimbursement. 

The church stands squarely across from Monroe Park and is surrounded by the rapidly expanding Virginia Commonwealth University and the city’s diverse residential Fan District. These assets support our outreach to students, faculty, and staff of the university, nearby residents, and those who work in this part of town. In addition to sharing in all clergy duties, we seek an Assistant Priest both to support ongoing outreach ministries and to explore new ones and communicate how we are serving God in our community.  

Division of focus areas will be 50% clergy duties, 25% outreach and 25% communication leadership. The clergy duties will include:
-Share in leading worship, preaching, and the administration of the sacraments with the Priest in Charge, and the other clergy;
-Share in the pastoral care of the congregation;
-Share in planning, organization and visioning for the Staff Team and Parish members.

Outreach

Central Richmond is home to a number of communities of faith. GHTC has a long history of cooperation with neighboring congregations in service to our neighborhoods and the greater Richmond area. Circles RVA, an innovative ecumenical hands-on program housed at GHTC, is based on a national model that works to build communities to end poverty. Our Red Door Ministry has been providing regular help to people struggling with food insecurity and homelessness since the early 1980s. In collaboration with VCU’s dental school, parishioners make periodic MissionTrips to Belize to provide dental care. 

Communication

Because our congregation isn’t drawn from one well-defined geographic area, there is a constant need to expand our communication efforts to inform and invite more participants to experience both our own offerings and those in the community. For example, we have much to offer young families through formation for all ages and need to articulate these opportunities more effectively so that more families feel invited to become involved in the vibrant life of the parish. We are utilizing a variety of different communication streams with the help of the current communication team. Our connection with the VCU community has grown in recent years, and we are aware that even more can be done to connect with students, faculty and staff. Our university chaplain ministry is housed next door to the church at the campus’ Pace Center. 

Today and Tomorrow

We feel blessed to have relatively new young staff members who are eager to serve. This talented group welcomes more clergy partnership and leadership. The new Priest-in-Charge, Father Brent, is looking for a minister collaborator to help bring the staff, church, and community partners together to develop a vision further and to provide leadership to support and guide it. Father Brent comes with 25+ years of education, liturgy/preaching, congregational development, pastoral care, and clergy mentorship experience.

Grace & Holy Trinity is looking for more priest leadership both to build our fellowship as a community and to help us reach out to the wider world for continued growth in the beloved programs we have begun. Priests are some of the parish’s most visible messengers; we expect them to help us communicate clearly and frequently about the mission of this parish, the programs we offer, and our direction as a faith community.
