Letter from Susan Hankins
Greetings walkers,
Weather permitting, please come for a walk this Saturday, May 17th, starting at 9:00 a.m. We’ll walk the Richmond Slave Trail, a 5-mile round trip. It is an out and back walk. The Slave Trail is fascinating, sobering, and traverses a variety of paths: riverside woods, a bit of the Richmond Floodwall, across the 14th Street Bridge, through Shockoe Bottom, and over to the African Burial Ground on E. Broad Street, near 16th Street. The site is dominated by Interstate 95 next to it. Despite that, the Burial Ground is one of the prettiest green spaces in Richmond – lovely and spiritual, hidden in plain sight.
The walk starts at Ancarrow’s Landing, 1200 Brander Street (Richmond, VA 23224), across the James River from Rockett’s Landing. Feel free to meet at church to carpool, or meet the group at Ancarrow’s Landing. It’s off of Maury Street in South Richmond. Take Interstate 95 south across the James River and get off at the Maury Street exit. Bear right onto Maury Street. Stay on Maury Street. As it approaches the I-95 overpass, the road bears right and becomes Brander Street. In about 1/2 mile, turn left into Ancarrow’s Landing and park. It’s a spacious area with an expansive view of the James River. The Slave Trail begins at the western end of the parking lot, which is the upriver side (the far left edge of the parking area as you face the river), closest to the downtown buildings.
If you want to carpool from the Grace & Holy Trinity Church parking lot, be ready to leave from the lot by 9:00 a.m. sharp. We will plan to depart from Ancarrow’s Landing at 9:15 a.m. Expect this excursion to last 2–3 hours. Ironclad Coffee Roasters near the Burial Ground, so some of us may want to stop there.
Important: Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes. On this weekend’s stroll, please bring insect repellent, and put it on before we start. We have at least a half-mile of walking on a woodland path at the beginning and end of the walk. A hat is recommended, and I strongly encourage you to bring water.
Let me know if you plan to come. I can carry six people in my car. We will try to round up another car and driver if more than six want to ride from church.
The next walk will begin at 9:00 a.m., June 7th, from Grace & Holy Trinity Church and will go to Hollywood Cemetery. It’s always a lovely place in which to spend some time, honoring those we’ve loved and lost.
Questions? Please email, call, or text to Susan Hankins at (804) 938-8440.
Hope to see you on this Saturday’s hike. It’s a good one.
